County jail to receive new roof

April 22--A special meeting of the Navarro County Commissioners Court was held at 9 a.m. Friday, April 21. County Judge H.M. Davenport was not present.

Items considered included the consent agenda, which included paying bills as submitted by the County Auditor, current bills and payroll, as well as approving Texas Association of Counties Risk Management property insurance renewal.

Other items heard include:

--Burn ban. There is still no burn ban in place, but Commissioner James Olsen asked that people still burn with caution due to high winds.

--Approved declaring 26 old desks and three small stands as salvage. According to James "Buddy" Kirk the furniture in question came from the offices/court in the old mall, and the pieces need to be removed from the storage facility in order to make room for other desks that will be salvage in the not-too-distant future, as most employees in the courthouse received new desks.

--Capt. Bret Latta of the Navarro County Sheriff's Office presented two bids to the court for consideration regarding replacing the roof on the jail. A bid from American Roofing & Construction in the amount of $178,900 was approved. The company did provide warranties on the workmanship and labor, and Latta said the goal was to bring it back to a roof that would be substantial for the next 10 years. He also said a portion of that would be paid by the county's insurance.

--The court considered approving a specific use permit with contingencies for Michael Galvin, who was present, to put two shipping containers on his property on SE CR 3140. Stanley Young, planning and zoning officer, said the Planning and Zoning Board met April 10, and from letters they had sent to homeowners in the area, had come up with a contingency list regarding the shipping containers. Commissioner Dick Martin asked Galvin if he was willing to abide by the contingencies. Galvin said he was. Court approved the permit.

--Consideration to approve Resolution for Downtown Reinvestment Tax Credits was tabled due to the absence of Scott Jones, economic development director.

--Executive session to discuss personnel was canceled.
