Cory Hicks of Grantsboro facing felony charge after crash, chase

Jan. 11--A Pamlico County man is facing multiple charges as the result of a police chase last Friday evening.

Cory Allen Hicks, 27, of Moores Swamp Road, Grantsboro, was charged with felony fleeing or eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, DWI and driving while his license was revoked.

The incident began at about 6 p.m. Friday when an Alcohol Law Enforcement officer spotted Hicks erratically driving a Ford Focus on Trent Boulevard in New Bern. The officer gave chase, and Hicks drove onto U.S. 70, crossing the Trent River Bridge before veering off and taking the U.S. 17/N.C. 55 Neuse River Bridge.

At that point, the Highway Patrol picked up the chase.

Trooper J. Midgette pursued the car across the bridge and, as Hicks came off the bridge, Midgette nudged the pursued vehicle from behind, forcing Hicks' car off the road.

Hicks went off the road from the right lane, struck a guard rail, and crossed the northbound lane, coming to rest in the median. His car was heavily damaged in the incident.

Investigators found what they suspected was heroin and a needle in the car, according to troopers at the scene.

Both Hicks and an unidentified woman who was a passenger were taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern for treatment.

Hicks was treated and released. No information has been given regarding his passenger, though a person describing herself as Hicks' mother told the Sun Journal the passenger was his girlfriend.

According to online court records, Hicks faces two unrelated counts of misdemeanor larceny in Craven County. He also faces a number of traffic offenses stemming from unrelated incidents in Craven, including driving while license revoked, aggressive driving, reckless driving, making an unsafe lane change, driving left of center, failing to stop at a red light, failing to wear a seat belt, having no tag and having no vehicle insurance, online records show.
