Corps to Implement Advance Flood Risk Management Measures in Glendale Narrows

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20 -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Los Angeles District issued the following news release:

Due to the forecast of excessive rain for the Los Angeles area this weekend, the Corps will close the equestrian access point in the temporary protective barrier along the east bank of the Los Angeles River in the Glendale Narrows area near Verdant Street.

The temporary protective barrier was installed in January 2016 to increase bank height along the most vulnerable reaches of the LA River in anticipation of the predicted 2015/2016 El Nino storm season.

The point was opened in June 2016 to restore access for equestrians.

Closure work will begin Jan. 21 and is expected to be completed in one day. Corps staff will be working on the east bank maintenance road adjacent to the Los Angeles River channel. The Corps urges the public to avoid this active construction area during this time period.

Once this weekend's series of storms passes and there is no immediate threat of additional rainfall, the equestrian access point will be reopened to the public.

As part of advance measures to reduce flood risk, the Corps will also be staging equipment and a minimum of 45 cubic yards of rock on the land side of the levee in the Los Feliz golf course parking lot. This work will begin Jan. 22 at 7 a.m. The rock will be used if circumstances necessitate an active flood fight.

Flood risk management structures reduce risk, but they don't eliminate it. Those who rely on flood control structures should know their risk, know their role and take appropriate action to reduce their flood risk through prudent evacuation planning and by obtaining flood insurance.
