CITY OF ALEXANDRIA RECOGNIZES VIRGINIA'S FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK
States News Service
The following information was released by the City of Alexandria, Virginia:
This Virginia Flood Awareness Week, the City of Alexandria encourages residents to learn about flood risk and the importance of flood insurance. As spring rains and hurricane season approach, now is an ideal time to prepare for potential flooding. Virginia Flood Awareness Week will be observed from Sunday, March 8, to Saturday, March 14, 2026.
On February 28, 2026, the City of Alexandria recognized Virginia's Flood Awareness Week with a proclamation at the City's legislative meeting.
The City has experienced more intense storm events influenced by climate change, resulting in large volumes of rainfall over short periods of time. The City acknowledges the potential for future flood risks caused by storms and their impact on residents, as outlined in the City's Environmental Action Plan 2040 and in the Climate Emergency Resolution adopted by the City Council on October 22, 2019.
Flood Action Alexandria launched in 2021 as a comprehensive initiative to address flooding issues. Through the Flood Mitigation Grant Program, the City continues to address existing issues identified through resident feedback, engineering analysis, and field observations. Working with engineers and construction professionals, the design and construction of mitigation projects consistently include community input and engagement.
Residents can track the progress of the City's Flood Action Alexandria capital projects using the digital Project Dashboard.
