City looks to buy sprinkler controls for $160K

Victoria Advocate (TX)

Oct. 24--After putting the brakes on a proposal to spend $160,000 on a sprinkler control system for the Riverside Golf Course, the City Council is planning to take up the decision again Wednesday.

Last week, some city council members were hesitant to purchase new equipment after parts of the irrigation system were flooded after Hurricane Harvey. Some council members said they wanted to ensure the system wouldn't flood again before spending $160,000 on it.

"If we're going to invest this much, we need to make sure our investment is sound," said Councilman Andrew Young.

Even before the storm, the equipment was "unreliable" because staff couldn't operate it remotely, according to the city. But days after Hurricane Harvey, floodwaters from the Guadalupe River spilled into the golf course, damaging 36 of the 41 control boxes used to run sprinklers.

The entire system needs to be replaced now. City staff contacted Professional Turf Products and Toro Irrigation to create a replacement system, but some council members were hesitant to move forward without knowing the system would be safe from future flooding.

"Why don't you elevate it?" Councilman Jeff Bauknight asked at a meeting last week.

Also Wednesday, Mayor Paul Polasek is expected to discuss water customer leaks because of the storm. Donald Reese, who oversees public works, will also discuss some street projects for 2018.
