CHP reminds drivers not to drink, drive Super Bowl Sunday
Ventura County Star (CA)
Feb. 03--The California Highway Patrol and local police agencies are reminding drivers not to drink before getting behind the wheel this Super Bowl Sunday.
Motorists are instead encouraged "to make arrangements beforehand" to prevent those who've been drinking from getting behind the wheel, the CHP said.
"Drunk driving continues to be a serious and deadly problem," Joe Farrow, the CHP's commissioner, said. "While many will be watching the football game, our officers will be out patrolling the highways to ensure motorists arrive safely at their destination."
One person was killed in an alcohol-involved collision in California during last year's Super Bowl, while 52 others were injured, the CHP said.
The CHP also arrested 360 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence during last year's Super Bowl.
Those convicted of a DUI face jail time, the loss of their driver's license, higher insurance rates, court fees, car towing and repair costs and lost wages from time off work.
"There are no excuses when it comes to driving under the influence," Farrow said. "Alternative transportation is easily accessible in California, so celebrate responsibly and plan ahead."
Those hosting a Super Bowl party should help ensure that their guests are safe by serving them non-alcoholic drinks and helping their guests find a safe ride home.
Anyone who sees a suspected drunk driver is asked to call 911. Callers should be prepared to give the vehicle's description, location, license plate number and direction of travel.
