Child among three injured in two-alarm fire at Emeryville-North Oakland border

Jun. 26--EMERYVILLE -- A child was among three people hospitalized Wednesday morning in a two-alarm fire that burned at least three homes near the Oakland border, officials said.

The conditions of the three were not known immediately, but they all escaped the flames and were outside by the time fire crews arrived, according to officials. The fire began around 8:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of 47th Street, near Adeline Street.

Three other people were evaluated and treated at the scene, officials said.

Investigators do not know yet what started the fire, but it started at a two-story residence and then spread to an adjacent house and a house behind the adjacent one.

About 50 firefighters from Alameda County Fire and the Oakland Fire Department brought it under control around 9:45 a.m.

Sara Bohannon, 35, one the residents at the residence next to where the fire started, said she heard noises, and then looked to see what was happening.

"I saw it was a fire and jumped out of bed," she said. She was able to flee with her pet tarantula and her cat, Maia, which she found hiding under a couch. By the time she got outside "smoke had started to come into my part of the home and the back of my building was on fire."

She was not sure if she would require the assistance of the Red Cross or perhaps stay with friends. "I feel lucky," she said. "I have renters insurance."

It was unclear how many people were displaced.

Streets in the area were closed while crews fought the fire.
