Charlotte Striebel

Berkshire Eagle, The (Pittsfield, MA)

Charlotte Striebel

1930 - 2022

Charlotte Blackwell Striebel passed away on May 12 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Born June 4, 1930, to James W. and Mary Hood Black-well, Charlotte grew up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, spending summers with her family in South Carolina.

After her 1948 graduation from Pittsfield HS, she attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. Returning to Pittsfield after college, she worked as an executive secretary at the Berkshire Mutual Fire Insurance Company and enjoyed years of membership with the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Women. Marrying Vernon L. Striebel in 1960, she filled her life with family, service, leadership, and fun.

Charlotte brought great enthusiasm to every organization she joined, and often, became a leader. Her years in Pittsfield were filled with happy participation in the Junior League of Berk-shire County, Girls' Club of Pittsfield, South Mountain Concert Series, and Western Massachusetts Girls Scout Council, where she served as Council President. Moving to Southampton, MA, she was instrumental in establishing a women's golf league. Her Southampton years also introduced an interest in politics that would follow her to the Cape, where she moved in 1984.

While living in Yarmouth, she was the Golf Commissioner and served multiple terms as a Town Selectman, including as Chairman for the Board of Selectmen.

Later elected to the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates, she was its Speaker.

Charlotte was also a board member of the Cape Light Compact and The Children's Cove.

From her first lessons in high school, she loved the game of golf and always strived to improve. Golf brought her many treasured friendships and great joy in playing the beautiful courses of Berkshire, Hampshire, and Barnstable Counties.

A lifelong Christian, Char-lotte was an active member in her churches, most recently the Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Predeceased by her husband of 55 years and her sister, Mary Black-well Knowles, Charlotte is survived by her daughter Pamela and son-in-law David Doyle, granddaughters Lillian and Rebecca Doyle, nephews James, Robert, and Stephen Knowles, nieces Laura Knowles, Sarah, and Sophia Truden, lifelong friends Mary Granfield Gallant and Joan Dennison Bell, and many dear friends who were family to her.

A graveside service will be held on November 22, 2022, at 10:15 am at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
