Chad Daybell's trial starts Monday with jury selection

Standard-Journal (Rexburg, ID)

It's been nearly one year since the high-profile Lori Vallow trial took the Ada County Courthouse in Boise by storm, filling the streets with press and onlookers, all equally eager and horrified as the case unfolded.

Now, it's Chad Daybell's turn.

Daybell's trial begins on April 1 with jury selection, which could take days if not weeks. The trial date was set by Judge Steven Boyce last summer.

Daybell has been awaiting trial on the same charges his wife, Vallow, faced last spring including first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the deaths of 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old J.J. Vallow — Vallow's two children — and Daybell's wife, Tammy. Daybell also faces charges of insurance fraud and grand theft.

Back in 2021, Daybell pleaded not guilty to all charges. Unlike Vallow's trial, the death penalty is an option for prosecution in Daybell's trial.

The trial will be live streamed via the court's broadcasting system and will be available for the public to watch on Judge Steven Boyce's Youtube.

On May 12, 2023, Lori Vallow was found guilty on all six charges she faced, including conspiracy to murder Tammy Daybell and the murders of J.J. and Tylee. She was also found guilty of grand theft, after taking her children's Social Security checks after their deaths.

The trial, beginning last April, lasted six weeks. On July 31, Vallow was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Vallow brought Tylee from a previous union to her fourth marriage to husband Charles Vallow. The couple went on to adopt J.J. in 2012.

Daybell and Vallow met in 2018. Charles Vallow filed for divorce from Lori in 2019. Daybell and Vallow were married in November 2019, just two weeks after Tammy Daybell was killed. Police ruled Tammy's death as suspicious in December 2019, two months after she allegedly died in her sleep.

In November 2019, police conducted a welfare check on J.J. at the request of his grandmother. When police arrived, Vallow informed them J.J. was in Arizona with a friend, which police later discovered was a lie.

As previously reported by Associated Press, the children were last seen alive in September 2019. Their bodies were found in Chad Daybell's yard in the summer of 2020.

The couple left Rexburg and traveled to Hawaii later that month. In 2020, Vallow was served with a court order that requested she "physically produce Tylee and J.J. to the Idaho Department of Welfare in Rexburg, Idaho, or to the Rexburg Police within five days of being served with the order." She was arrested in February 2020 for failing to do so.
