Central blotter: Date night turns into crash and a DUI

Palm Beach Post (FL)

West Palm Beach Police

DUI: After rear-ending another vehicle at the intersection of Banyan Boulevard and Flagler Drive, a motorist explained to the responding officer that he’d been out on a date and had consumed two, maybe three glasses of wine. This synopsis of the last few hours of the man’s life was given through slurred speech tainted with the scent of an unknown alcoholic beverage while he gently swayed back and forth. In addition to the swaying, the man had no shoes and was seemingly oblivious as to where they might be. He agreed to take part in a roadside sobriety test and did poorly. He was arrested for DUI. His breath later showed that he was more twice the legal limit.

Shoplifting: Entering a store in the 1300 block of North Dixie Highway, a man, possibly looking to freshen up a bit, ambled over to the isle featuring various body washes and soaps. Once there he loaded his backpack with seven containers of body wash and multiple packages of soap. He then walked out of the store without paying for the nearly $60 in merchandise. The entire incident was captured on video surveillance.

Drug possession: Driving along Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard with an expired license plate, a motorist was pulled over at the on-ramp to Interstate 95. Making contact with the driver, the officer asked for her license, registration and insurance information. Unable to provide the officer with her license, or any form of identification, it was quickly discovered that her license was suspended. While interacting with her, the officer noticed the smell of freshly burnt marijuana emanating from the car. Confronted with this observation, she agreed to let her vehicle be searched. Inside, a half smoked blunt (a hollowed out cigar filled with marijuana) and a plastic bag filled with the green leafy substance were discovered. The woman admitted to having recently smoked the illicit weed, but denied actually knowing her license was suspended. She was arrested for drug possession.

Shoplifting: Removing the anti-theft device from a robotic vacuum, a woman placed the item along with two bedding sets into her car at a store in the 1700 block of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. Next, she wheeled the cart over to the registers where she stood for approximately two minutes. She then picked up the three items and walked out of the store without rendering payment. The items were worth nearly $450. The woman is suspected of having committed multiple thefts at the store. The entire incident was captured on video surveillance. The store said it would prosecute if the perpetrator is captured.

Shoplifting: Focused on home security a man walked into a store in the 1700 block of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and proceeded to the electronics section. Once there he selected a popular home video surveillance system, disabled the anti-theft device attached to it, stuffed it in his bag and walked out without paying. He was inside the store for seven minutes. The system was worth approximately $200. The perpetrator has been suspected of multiple thefts and even had an active trespass warning in place. The crime was caught on video and a copy was given to the police.

Lantana Police

Assault: Panhandling inside a store in the 1300 block of West Lantana Road, a woman was asked to leave by the clerk. This did not sit well with the money-seeking woman. She did leave, but not before throwing beer all over the clerk. He told police he would like to have her issued a trespass warning if she returns.

Threat: Helping a neighbor work on his car at his residence in the 300 block of Anderson Road, a man said he was aggressively approached by another neighbor. He claimed that the neighbor accused him of breaking into his car and promised to shoot him before reaching for his hip area. The man said he immediately went inside. The purported pistol-packing neighbor was contacted and said that while he does believe the man broke into his vehicle and confronted him, he never said he was going to shoot him. While speaking to police, he did yell at the man and called him a piece of (expletive). The man said he would be staying away from the neighbor.

Burglary: Whether they were looking for an easy mark or just being good Samaritans trying to make sure everyone had secured their vehicles for the night, two men were seen pulling on the door handles of a truck and an SUV at a residence in the 800 block of Palama Way. If they were up to no good, they picked the wrong house as the doors were locked on both vehicles. The incident was captured on the resident’s video surveillance system. Police were able to review the footage and get a good look at the suspects.

Grand theft: The muffler of a man’s work truck was cut off and stolen while the vehicle was parked outside the hotel he was staying at in the 1200 block of Hypoluxo Road. The man said last saw his truck at approximately 8:30 p.m. and when he started it up at 6:30 a.m. the next morning realized that something was wrong with it. A review of the hotel’s video surveillance showed the thief first stopping at the truck and stepping out of his truck just after midnight. The extremely brazen, and time-consuming, crime took nearly an hour to complete. Another vehicle parked at a hotel just down the street was hit by the same suspect. Both sets of video surveillance footage were entered into evidence.

Burglary vehicle: Two cars parked outside a residence in the 1000 block of West Central Boulevard were illegally entered. A backpack containing a $250 pair of headphones was stolen from one of the cars. The other was rummaged through but nothing was stolen. Both vehicles had been left unlocked. In video surveillance obtained from a nearby residence, an unknown person can be seen approaching the two vehicles. There is no suspect information at this time.

Burglary vehicle: A woman’s car was illegally entered while it was parked at her residence in the 500 block of West Perry Street. Though the car was rummaged through, nothing was taken. Concerned about the spread of Covid-19, the woman thoroughly cleaned the vehicle before police arrived. There was no video surveillance in the immediate vicinity.

Burglary: Attempting to gain entry to an enclosed trailer parked alongside a residence in the 600 block of North 4th Street, a perpetrator broke the door handle to the trailer off. It was found laying in the grass alongside the trailer. Despite their efforts, the perpetrator got away with nothing and never actually got inside the trailer. Photographs were taken of the trailer and broken handle and a DNA swab of the handle was taken and placed into evidence.

Property damage: Two trees in front of a residence in the 1100 block of Julia Heights Drive were damaged. One of the trees had a broken branch and the other was completely knocked over with scrape marks near the trunk. A tire mark was observed in the grass leading up to the trees. It is suspected that a vehicle rammed the trees causing the damage.
