CenterPlace shopping area could become haven for senior citizens
New development will add built-in shoppers for the area -- senior citizens -- in the form of residential housing and assisted living.

"What better place could there be?" Bedingfield said. "If family comes to town, there's hotels, there's restaurants, they can get their prescriptions. They're within walking distance of so many things. Even if they need transportation, they can get pretty much everything they need. It's all right there."
The area developers call CenterPlace North originally was scheduled mostly for retail and residential, but things have changed in the past three years.
"That's kind of indicative of the changing nature of retail," said CenterPlace developer
Although the periphery of CenterPlace North is filled with restaurants -- and indeed one more, a
"We went into it thinking we'd attract some larger retail users than what we've been able to attract, and that's just a function of what's going on in that" market, Bradley said.
In addition to the senior centers, residential tracts totaling about 21 acres at CenterPlace also will be conducive to maintenance-free living, Bradley said, which could attract more senior citizens to the area. Bradley said the plan is to make the area pedestrian and bike friendly, as well.
The emergence of services and living for senior citizens is part of meeting the demand in the market, Bradley said.
"I think, frankly, the medical stuff we got is probably somewhat of a reaction to UCHealth putting up a hospital at
Bedingfield agreed, adding that senior residents likely would flock to the area because it's fresh, safer and so close to everything they need.
"When you put all those pieces together, with that hospital being very close by, I can't think of a better place with everything they need as close as possible.
"It makes perfect sense."
A second hotel is still planned for the area, as well, but after the parcel closed last year, the ownership of the hotel changed, so plans are now up in the air, Bradley said.
