TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 27 -- The city of Tallahassee issued the following news release:
Recently, the City's Building Code Enforcement program underwent review and rating by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The effectiveness of building codes can have a profound effect on how structures in our community will fare in natural disasters, and building code enforcement can have a major influence on the economic well-being of a municipality and the safety of its citizens. Through comprehensive efforts to adopt, review and enforce strong building codes, the City of Tallahassee'sGrowth Management Department works to ensure that our community's structures are safe.
The ISO helps distinguish among communities with effective building code adoption and enforcement through a comprehensive program called the Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS). For the BCEGS, ISO collects information on a community's building code adoption and enforcement services, analyses the data and assigns a classification from 1 to 10, with 1 representing the highest class level.
In the recent evaluation, the City of Tallahassee maintained its class 3 rating for commercial construction and class 4 rating for residential construction. These classifications are well above the national average, and typically, a class 3 rating is the highest level achieved by communities.
ISO is an insurer-supported organization whose mission is to provide advisory insurance underwriting and rating information. Insurers may use the BCEGS classification as a basis for credits to newly constructed projects within the City of Tallahassee.
