BRIEF: Sales-tax holiday includes emergency supplies
San Angelo Standard-Times (TX)
April 12--In an effort to help ensure citizens are prepared for severe weather, Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminded Texans that many emergency-preparedness supplies are available tax-free during an April 22-24 sales-tax holiday.
"Unfortunately, we can't predict when the next fire, flood or tornado may strike," Hegar said. "But we can be prepared, and this tax holiday helps Texans save money while stocking up for emergency situations before they happen."
According to a news release, there is no limit on the number of qualifying items shoppers can buy, making it a good time to stock up.
Qualifying items include:
* Dry-cell batteries
* Fuel containers
* Flashlights less than $75
* Hurricane shutters and emergency ladders less than $300
* Portable generators less than $3,000
* Smoke detectors
* Fire extinguishers
* First aid kits
A complete list of emergency preparation supplies that may be purchased tax free can be found on the Comptroller's website.
Officials estimate shoppers will save $1.5 million during the tax holiday.
