BRIEF: Mattoon woman pleads guilty in Teutopolis bus crash

Sept. 12--Scarlett D. McKinzie, 37, Mattoon, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol related to the February crash in Moultrie County that involved a bus carrying Teutopolis students.

She waived her right to a jury or bench trial. Included in the count was that she failed to have liability insurance as the driver of the Dodge mini van that struck the bus, causing it to overturn on Illinois Route 32 near Moultrie County Road 800 North.

McKinzie said she understood the action of pleading guilty and that two other counts would be dropped in exchange. However, the agreement included that the sentencing would be decided by the court and there were no promises made in that area.

McKinzie's blood alchol content was .250, which exceeds the .08 legal limit to drive in Illinois.

Sentencing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 in Moultrie County Circuit Court.
