BRIEF: Lockport Council refuses to make mayor pay for health insurance

Dec. 08--A proposal to make the mayor of Lockport pay 15 percent of her health insurance premiums was defeated 4-2 at Wednesday's Common Council meeting.

The proposal came from outgoing Alderwoman Anita Mullane, D-2nd Ward, a frequent critic of Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey. Mullane's resolution stated that since the city is asking new hires to pay a percentage of their health premiums, the mayor also should do so.

The change would have taken effect in 2019, the year of the next mayoral election. But only Alderman Mark S. Devine, R-3rd Ward, voted with Mullane.

The City of Lockport has provided fully paid medical insurance for mayors since 1992. McCaffrey, mayor since 2014, said she took the coverage for the first time this year and will do so again in 2018.
