BRIEF: Erie County sheriff’s deputies ratify union contract
Buffalo News (NY)
Aug. 29--Erie County and union members of the Sheriff's Office have reached an agreement on a contract that raises wages by 13 percent and increases employee health insurance contributions over the five-year deal. The Erie County Sheriff's Police Benevolent Association ratified the new contract by an 89-6 vote.
"This contract demonstrates what can happen when two committed parties avoid gimmicks and shortcuts to iron out a responsible agreement that protects all involved," said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. "Erie County personnel are the backbone of our government, providing services, supports, and protection to residents every day, and my administration places a high priority on settling contract issues with our unions."
The contract, retroactive to Jan. 1, includes an increase in shift differential from the current 85 cents to $1. Contract negotiations also led to more work-rule efficiencies, additional sick leave, more health plan options, higher health insurance opt-out payments and increased health insurance premium sharing, with contributions capped at $6,000 for active employees and $8,000 for retirees.
