Jan. 28--A Redding man was arrested after the car he was driving was vaulted into the air and flipped after it hit the Highway 44 center median in downtown Redding at speeds reaching 100 mph.
Even though he suffered serious injuries the man tried to walk away from the crash, but California Highway Patrol officers arrested him on suspicion of drunken driving.
Lance Jones, 21, was driving west on Highway 44 at speeds exceeding 100 mph between Interstate 5 and Sundial Bridge Drive at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when he nearly crashed into three other vehicles, the CHP said.
A CHP helicopter crew saw Jones' car, a 2004 Audi, crash into the center median wall just east of Liberty Street in downtown Redding.
When the car hit the wall it flew up in the air and flipped over, landing on its roof in the oncoming lanes, the CHP said.
Jones was taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment. The CHP said it will seek charges against Jones for alleged DUI, driving without a license and having no insurance.
