BRIEF: Activists Plan Health Care Rally Outside DeLauro’s Office
Hartford Courant (CT)
July 20--Progressive activists are planning a rally outside of Rep. Rosa DeLauro'sNew Haven office Monday to push the liberal Democrat to support single-payer health care legislation.
The event, which begins at 4 p.m., coincides with the national Millions Marching for Medicare for All event in Washington.
"Now that Trumpcare has met its demise in the Senate and the ACA repeal is politically impossible, we insist our U.S. Representatives do more than defend the status quo," organizers said.
A single-payer bill introduced in the House by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has 115 co-sponsors, but none of Connecticut's five House members have signed on. DeLauro is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which has endorsed the bill as a group.
DeLauro and other members of the Connecticut delegation have said they support the idea of a single-payer system, but haven't co-sponsored the bill because it has no chance of passage in the Republican-controlled House, and their efforts have been focused on fighting back against the proposed repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
