Brabenec-Martens Assembly race too close to call

Nov. 07--The outcome of the 98th Assembly District race between Republican Assemblyman Karl Brabenec and Democratic challenger Scott Martens was not clear at press deadline.

Brabenec, who was Deerpark supervisor before being elected to the Assembly, touted his responsiveness to constituents, opposition to tax increases and farmer-friendly votes as reasons he should be re-elected..

Martens, a carpenter from Minisink making his first run for public office, waged opposition to the new power plant in Wawayanda before launching his candidacy. He supported legalizing marijuana, abortion rights and the creation of a single-payer public health insurance system.
