Blaze displaces two residents in Healing Springs

Dispatch, The (Lexington, NC)

Jan. 29--HEALING SPRINGS -- A Friday morning blaze on Summerville Church Road has displaced a man and his grandson.

Firefighters with the Healing Springs Fire Department responded to the mobile home fire at about 10:30 a.m. Healing Springs Fire Chief Chris Bean said his first fire truck on the scene arrived to find a single-wide mobile home, which is attached to a house, pretty much fully involved in flames.

"The roof, it was actually starting to collapse," Bean said. "(The fire) moved onto the wooden part of the structure as it progressed."

Bean called the mobile home a total loss, but the house can likely be repaired. No one was at home at the time of the fire.

Bean estimated it took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported.

Davidson County Deputy Fire Marshal Glenn Pressley was on the scene conducting his investigation. It was unclear early Friday afternoon what caused the fire.

Sonya Hughes' father-in-law, 67-year-old Ray Hughes, and her son, 25-year-old Brandon Hughes, lived at the residence that caught fire. She said her father-in-law left the home at 5 a.m. and her son at 8 a.m. Sonya Hughes lives near the residence.

"I came back at 9," she said. "I didn't see anything up here at 9."

Hughes said she doesn't know what caused the fire. She explained her father-in-law heated with a wood stove.

"We don't know until they investigate," she said.

Hughes said her father-in-law was getting his treatment for cancer Friday morning. He's been battling cancer for about two years. Ray Hughes' wife, Rebecca, died in November 2015 from heart failure.

Hughes said the displaced Hughes family will be staying with family members. Her son was staying with Ray Hughes, taking care of him. There was no insurance on the house.

Responding agencies were the Healing Springs, South Davidson, South Lexington, Silver Valley, Denton, Southmont and Linwood fire departments. The Davidson County Fire Marshal's Office was assisted by the Davidson County Fire Investigation Task Force, which included response from the Thomasville Fire Marshal's Office. Davidson County EMS also responded.

"In this time of day, everybody is at work," Bean said, referring to the multiple fire departments that responded. "It's hard to get many people. It takes six departments. Usually on a fire this size, you need at least a dozen (firefighters). If you can double that number, you are good."
