APCIA Commends White House Action to Modernize Energy Building Codes to Improve Climate Resilience

The Biden-Harris Administration announced $90M in funding to help communities across the nation implement updated energy building codes to enhance climate resilience. Nat Wienecke, senior vice president of federal government relations at the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) released the following statement:

"APCIA commends the Biden-Harris Administration for its efforts to enhance climate resilience for communities through competitive grants. This action will help state, local, and tribal entities, including underserved communities, modernize their building codes to improve energy efficiency and increase their capacity to withstand the impacts of extreme weather."

For decades, APCIA members have advocated for policies and increased investments that improve resilience to natural disasters and extreme weather events, including supporting the adoption and enforcement of hazard-resistant building codes. This also includes establishing and funding loss mitigation-focused organizations like the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). Through the IBHS, the property casualty insurance sector has been at the forefront of developing real-world solutions to reduce harm, including scientifically proven building standards that individuals and businesses can employ to help withstand increasingly severe storms, wildfires, and other natural disasters. The National Institute of Building Sciences has shown that every $1 spent on natural hazard mitigation in new code construction can save $11 in disaster repair and recovery costs.
