Amesbury receives safety grants

AMESBURY — The city of Amesbury was recently awarded a total of $5,888 in grants from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA), the city’s property and casualty insurance provider, to support investments that strengthen operational safety and risk management.

The grants allowed the city’s Department of Public Works to purchase a thermal imaging camera and new personal protective equipment, including chainsaw chaps, safety helmets, earplugs, safety glasses, and custom logo safety vests. The thermal imaging camera provides crews with a valuable tool for identifying subsurface moisture and temperature variations that can indicate potential infrastructure issues, while the new safety gear helps reduce the risk of injury during tree and road work.

“This grant allows us to make practical, targeted safety improvements that protect our employees and support essential public works operations,” Mayor Kassandra Gove said. “The new equipment gives our crews the tools and protection they need to work more safely and effectively in the field.”

For fiscal 2025, MIIA awarded $1 million to fund over 150 grant requests from members for public safety activities and equipment. Municipalities were able to conduct HVAC evaluations, purchase confined space safety equipment and conduct boiler and water loss prevention measures, among many other initiatives.

“This grant is about real-world impact – helping municipalities reduce claims, safeguard municipal assets, and protect workers,” said Stan Corcoran, MIIA executive vice president. “Helping our members build safer communities is central to MIIA’s mission, and we’re pleased to support Amesbury as it strengthens efforts to prevent losses and protect both employees and residents.”
