AmeriHealth Caritas to join Ohio Health Insurance Marketplace in 2027

Health insurer AmeriHealth Caritas will begin offering plans on Ohio's Health Insurance Marketplace in 2027, expanding access to health coverage in all the state’s largest metro areas, according to a press release from the company.

Ohio families deserve meaningful choices when it comes to their health coverage," said Andy Marino, senior vice president of Medicare, Exchange, and Provider Network at AmeriHealth Caritas.

AmeriHealth Caritas Next plans will be available in the Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown metro areas, along with most of their surrounding suburbs. The combined service area includes 11 counties: Butler, Clermont, Cuyahoga, Delaware, Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas, Mahoning, Miami, Montgomery, and Warren counties.

Since 2023, AmeriHealth Caritas has served Ohioans through its Medicaid managed care plan, AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio.

“The company's expansion into the Marketplace builds on its commitment to the state and provides additional coverage options in a market where choices have narrowed and costs have increased for consumers,” the company press release states.

AmeriHealth Caritas started offering Marketplace plans in North Carolina in 2022 and has since grown into six more states, including Ohio.

AmeriHealth Caritas operates in 13 states and the District of Columbia. The Pennsylvania-based healthcare company serves millions of Medicaid, Medicare, Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Health Insurance Marketplace members through its integrated managed care products, pharmaceutical benefit management and specialty pharmacy services, and behavioral health services.

Open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage begins Nov. 1, 2026. Coverage will take effect Jan. 1, 2027.

For 2027, the Ohio Department of Insurance approved nine companies to sell on the Marketplace exchange, down from 11 companies in 2026. Based on the department's approved plan information, five counties will only have two insurers offering plans in those areas, while all other counties will have three or more insurers.

All of the companies that have filed to sell in the 2027 Ohio Insurance ACA Marketplace, according to the Ohio Department of Insurance, include:

Dayton-based health insurer CareSource and health insurer Molina Healthcare of Ohio currently have plans offered through the Ohio Marketplace exchange that will not be available in in 2027. About a combined 54,000 Ohioans currently get their health insurance from those two insurers through the Ohio Marketplace, according to the Ohio Department of Insurance.
