A.G. Beshear to Host Third-annual Summit on Issues Facing Senior Kentuckians

FRANKFORT, Kentucky, Sept. 19 -- Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear issued the following news release:

Attorney General Andy Beshear is hosting the third-annual daylong Senior Summit Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Lexington Senior Center, 195 Life Lane in Lexington.

Featured topics include preventing financial exploitation of nursing home residents; creating financial planning for veterans and overall elder care; understanding banking fraud and investigations; and summarizing top federal prosecutions of trending scams presented by the United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District.

A core mission of Beshear is to better protect Kentucky seniors, who he believes, should be able to age with dignity.

"Our seniors are under attack, whether they are the victim of physical abuse or the latest scam," Beshear said. "This summit is an opportunity for all our partners to collaborate toward fighting for seniors who are targeted because they're more likely to have considerable savings, be more trusting and some are targeted because of their physical vulnerability."

Beshear's office protects seniors through two of its branches. The first branch, the Office of Senior Protection, was created by Beshear to protect seniors from scams and financial abuse. The second branch, the Office of Medicaid Fraud and Abuse, operates Kentucky's Elder Abuse hotline and prosecutes those who harm seniors.

The third-annual Senior Summit begins at 9 a.m., and the last speaker is scheduled to finish at 4:15 p.m.

Attendees and booth vendors include the Alzheimer's Association; the Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckian; the Kentucky Bankers Association; Lexington Police Department; Louisville Metro Police Department; U.S. Attorney's Offices for the Eastern and Western Districts; U.S. Department of Justice; U.S. Postal Inspection Services; numerous Area Development Districts; and numerous state agencies including the Administrative Office of the Courts, and Cabinet for Health and Families Services.
