Woodville appoints new trustee [The Porterville Recorder, Calif.]

Esther Avila, The Porterville Recorder, Calif.

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

Oct. 30--The Woodville Union School District Board of Trustees provisionally appointed Diana Oceguera-Martinez as its fifth board member during a special board meeting held Monday at Woodville Elementary School.

Oceguera-Martinez will be sworn in at the district's next regularly-scheduled board meeting on Nov. 4, joining trustees Amanda Medina, Fabiola Guerrero, Miguel Guillen and Lorena Espinoza.

Oceguera-Martinez will hold the position through November 2014, when the district will hold its next election.

The decision was not an easy one, Woodville School superintendent Dago Garcia said.

Ocequera-Martinez, a registered dental assistant, and Anthony Mosleh, a gas foreman for a utility company, were interviewed by Garcia and the board Monday night.

"Both candidates were very eloquent and presented good arguments on why they should be on the board," Garcia said. "But, the board chose who they thought would best compliment the position."

Oceguera-Martinez has lived in Woodville since 2010 and is active in the community. She was instrumental in starting a Kiwanis Kids Club, the Woodville Twirlers baton group and ran the Little Miss Woodville pageant for little girls. In October 2011, Oceguera-Martinez also expressed interest in and was interviewed, for a trustee position following the resignation of two board members.

Her current appointment will fill a void left by board member Monica Romero, who has stepped down due to a new job and to spend time with her family.

"[Oceguera-Martinez] will finish the term left vacant when Monica Romero resigned. Monica Romero did an outstanding job while on the school board," Garcia said. "As board president, she guided the school through some rather difficult times. Monica made every effort to get educated in all the issues that impacted Woodville School. As a board member she worked tirelessly to insure that Woodville students were at the top of every employees list."

Garcia also said the Woodville School board and its administration wish Romero well in her endeavor and thanked her for "getting Woodville Elementary back on the right track."

The next regular board meeting will be held at 5 p.m.Nov. 14 in the cafeteria at Woodville Elementary School, 16541 Rd. 168.
