Video: Police searching for burglar who has broken into several businesses on Cape Horn Road

Sept. 30--Video: Security camera catches intruder

It happened at 12:04 a.m. Saturday, said Joni Kauffman, owner of the Cape Horn Family Restaurant.

She knows the exact time because it was recorded by security cameras. The suspect, wearing a dark hoodie, hurled a rock through the front door of the restaurant, in the strip mall at the corner of Cape Horn Road and Lombard Street in Windsor Township, and entered. He took the restaurant's computer/register and dragged it through the door, dropping the monitor as he crawled through the broken glass.

He returned a few minutes later. Kauffman said that was probably because the cash drawer was empty; the restaurant removes its receipts at the end of business each day. The burglar went to the kitchen, got a butcher's knife and pried open the door to the office, where he tried to remove the restaurant's safe.

"He moved it about 10 or 12 inches," Kauffman said. "I don't know how he did it. That safe weighs about 900 pounds."

He didn't get anything from the burglary, she said. Insurance will cover the damage to the restaurant and replacement of the computer, she said.

"This restaurant's been here 15 years," said Kauffman, who bought it two and a half years ago, "and it had never been broken into."

The burglary is one of as many as half a dozen at businesses and churches along Cape Horn Road believed by York Area Regional Police to be the work of a single suspect.

"It appears to be one person," said Sgt. Peter Montgomery.

Among the business preyed upon was the Clarity Salon, a hair salon in a strip mall next door to District Justice John Fishel's office in the 2900 block of Cape Horn Road. The salon was broken into Wednesday.

In that burglary, owner Katie Moyer-Laucks said, the suspect also broke out the glass in the front door with a rock and took cash, getting away with about $275.

"Nothing else was disturbed," Moyer-Laucks said. "We're a small business. Two-hundred and seventy-five dollars is a lot of money to us."

Police said the same suspect is believed to be responsible for similar burglaries at Red Lion Chiropractic, in the 2500 block of Cape Horn Road, and perhaps two other businesses and one church.

Saturday morning, police issued a text alert, asking residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity around local businesses after hours by calling 911 immediately.
