U.S. Postal Service to Approve North Plainfield ZIP Code Request

SOMERVILLE, N.J., Sept. 23 -- Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders issued the following news release:

The Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders recently passed a resolution supporting the Borough of North Plainfield in its application for a unique postal identity from the United States Postal Service.

North Plainfield residents share three ZIP codes with the City of Plainfield in Union County, which results in mail and package deliveries to erroneous destinations, jury summonses and other mail from Union County, and incorrect insurance quotes.

"North Plainfield asked the United States Postal Service to address these problems in 2004," said Freeholder Peter Palmer. "An abundantly problematic issue with such a simple solution should have been addressed long ago."

The borough's application for ZIP code adjustment was denied in September 2004. Municipalities can only apply every 10 years.

"As a former resident of North Plainfield, I know firsthand the annoyances and confusion arising from sharing ZIP codes with Plainfield," said Freeholder Director Patrick Scaglione. "I hope U.S.P.S. acts swiftly this time around."
