Texas Auto Accident Attorneys at Tummel & Casso Comment on Self-Driving Cars, Auto Accident Risks

PR Web

McAllen, TX (PRWEB) February 02, 2014

The number of self-driving cars will dramatically increase in the next 20 years, resulting in more efficient vehicles that have fewer car accidents, according to a recent study that Texas personal injury lawyer Ken Tummel, of Tummel & Casso law firm in McAllen, TX, said he hopes turns out to be true.

Tummel based his comments on an article published by NBC News about self-driving cars. (NBC News, “Self-driving cars popular by mid-century: study,” Jan. 6, 2014)

“Anything car companies can do to reduce the number of auto accidents is a welcome change, and the production of autonomous cars could prove to be one of the most significant safety developments we have ever seen,” Tummel said. “Auto accidents devastate families’ lives. We know because our law firm has worked with so many people affected by horrific car accidents in McAllen and throughout Texas. Our experience shows us that most accidents are caused by human error, and it appears the technology behind self-driving cars will reduce the chance of that happening.”

Self-driving cars will account for half of the vehicles sold in North America by 2035, according to a recent study reported on by NBC News. The study was conducted by IHS Automotive. By 2050, almost all vehicles will offer a self-driving mode, IHS Automotive predicted, according to NBC News.

In addition, one of the authors of the IHS Automotive study said “overall accident rates will decline steadily” as self-driving vehicles become more common, NBC News reported. Another news report about the IHS Automotive study about self-driving cars (SDCs) highlighted the same aspect of the IHS report, noting that “accident rates will plunge to near zero for SDCs,” according to an article published by Insurance & Financial Advisor News, “Self-driving cars in 20 years could dramatically decrease accidents,” Jan. 10, 2014.

Tummel said auto accidents, especially fatal car accidents, remain a serious problem in Texas. In 2012, a total of 3,398 people died in auto accidents in Texas, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Drivers need to be more responsible in order to reduce the number of car accidents, according to McAllen, TX auto accident attorney Lydia Casso of Tummel & Casso.

“Most car accidents aren’t accidents,” Lydia Casso said. “In many cases, drivers fail to drive responsibly and cause serious or even fatal car accidents. Speeding, drunk driving, texting while driving, falling asleep at the wheel – all of these common causes of car accidents can easily be prevented. If you are injured in a car accident or a loved one is injured or killed, you should seek the advice of legal counsel. “
