Suspended hockey player convicted of disorderly conduct

Aug. 11--BANGOR, Maine -- A suspended University of Maine hockey player was convicted Monday of disorderly conduct but his future with the team appears to be uncertain.

Ryan Lomberg 19, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, did not appear at the Penobscot Judicial Center. His attorney, Peter Cyr of Portland, also was not in court Monday. Richard Hartley of Bangor handled the matter on Lomberg's behalf.

In a plea agreement with the Penobscot County district attorney's office, Lomberg was convicted of a misdemeanor and paid a $1,000 fine in connection with an April 26 off campus incident. An assault charge was dismissed.

Lomberg has paid $252.62 in restitution to pay the victim's medical expenses not covered by insurance, Hartley told Superior Court Justice William Anderson.

Hartley was in court Aug. 4 and had intended to enter the plea on Lomberg's behalf but did not have the fine payment. The case was continued until Monday, Hartley said Monday.

He faced up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 on the disorderly conduct charge.

Lomberg was suspended by UMaine after an altercation in which he was accused of knocking a man to the floor and kicking him in the face and midsection before being pulled off the victim. The man suffered a broken nose and concussion before he went to the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor on his own, according to Orono police.

He is not listed on UMaine's 2014-15 roster.

University officials have said that he is not a student.

Hartley said Monday that he had no information about Lomberg's future plans.

Lomberg appears headed to the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League, according to a previously published report. He had his rights swapped to Youngstown from the Lincoln Stars after Lincoln had obtained him from Muskegon.

Lincoln picked up three draft choices for Lomberg, a second-round pick and two other conditional picks.

Lomberg had 11 goals and 7 assists in 34 games as a sophomore at Maine last season after posting 7 & 7 in 32 games as a freshman.

The USHL is an amateur league, so he could play college hockey again beginning in 2015-16.
