SAN ANGELO COLTS: Weatherly, Chavez power shutout over Charros

July 30--Former Angelo State pitcher Mike Weatherly threw a complete-game, two-hitter to lead the San Angelo Colts to a 7-0 win over the Brownsville Charros on Tuesday at Foster Field.

Weatherly didn't allow his first hit until the fifth inning when Goose Kallunki hit a two-out double. After a Derrick Pyles single to lead off the sixth, Weatherly didn't give up another hit.

He finished with four strikeouts and walked two to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Matt Chavez had a three-run home run and four RBIs to power the offense. He drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, followed by a three-run blast in the sixth.

San Angelo tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.

K.J. McAllister, Eric Herman and Chris Grossman drove in one run each for the Colts, who improved to 24-34. The Colts began the night eight games behind Fort Worth for the second and final playoff spot in the United League.

Luis Pardo took the loss for last-place Brownsville, which dropped to 21-37. Pardo gave up four hits and five runs in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.

The series continues at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
