Prep roundup: Santa Fe Prep beats St. Michael’s on soggy pitch

Sept. 30--A pregame downpour was no match for the first few moments of Monday afternoon's girls soccer match between Santa Fe Preparatory and visiting St. Michael's.

Out there on the field for the opening kick was Prep senior Grace Barliant, a player who recently had to give up her prep career due to a medical condition. Before the game, which the Lady Horsemen went on to win 3-0 in soggy, wet conditions, both head coaches agreed to let Barliant take the opening kick and dribble untouched into the St. Michael's end.

She was substituted for within moments, but it gave her a chance to be on the pitch for what may have been the final time this season.

"Just a great example of sportsmanship," said Prep coach Steph Coppola. "A very cool moment for her because both teams have so much respect for one another, and Grace plays club ball with a lot of those girls from St. Mike's. A very nice moment."

The Lady Horsemen (10-2, 4-0 in District 2A-AAAA) got goals from Nique Enloe, Cris Gabaldon and Bethany Gallegos while goalkeeper Alyssa Evans made one save for the shutout win. It was the team's fourth straight victory and seventh in the last eight outings.

Prep keeper Kate Martin faced 24 shots, making saves on several of them.

Enloe's goal was the only score in the first half. It was assisted by Isabel Chavez. The other goals came after halftime, the first on a penalty kick by Gabaldon. Gallegos's goal was assisted by Monse Camarena when she played the ball back to the PK line where Gallegos one-touched it home.

At Alto Park, the Lady Dragons (3-6-1, 2-1 in 2A-AAAA) got three goals from Jacquelin Galaviz in a district win over the host Lady Wildcats.

It was the second straight hat trick for Galaviz, coming on the heels of a three-goal game over the weekend against Santa Fe Prep.

She had two goals in the first half of Monday's game, which was played on the artificial surface in slick and soggy conditions. The Lady Dragons led 2-1 at halftime and got an insurance goal from Galaviz in the second half to close things out.

Alejandra Castillo got the win between the posts, making a handful of saves as the starting goalkeeper.

At Alto Park, the Dragons (7-5-2, 1-1-1 in 2A-AAAA) got three goals from senior Shalto Dascher and another from his twin brother, Skye, in a district win against the host Wildcats.

The brothers scored three of those goals in the second half, but it was Shalto's first goal midway through the opening half that ended the scoreless tie.

"We are starting to re-shape into a healthy team," said Monte del Sol head coach Mazatl Galindo. "We have had many players out recently and they are now back with us. But the good thing is we had the younger kids stepping into those big shoes and getting big experience."

Now almost back to full strength, the Dragons are unbeaten in their last three games after suffering through a three-game skid earlier this month.
