PollingNumbers.com: Pollsters Reveal Unanimous Discontent with Health Care Bill

The majority of Americans are in favor of a public health insurance option that competes with private insurance but do not support the current health care bill, says PollingNumbers.com, a website that tracks and publishes public opinion polls.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 24, 2009 -- PollingNumbers.com is a non-partisan website that tracks the polls on a variety of political issues and recently published an article entitled "Six of Six Pollsters Say Americans Are Against the Health Care Bill." As reported by Proloy Bhatta, co-founder of PollingNumbers.com, recent polls reveal that the majority of Americans do not support the current health care bill. According to Bhatta, opposition to the health care bill is ahead of its support by an average of eight points, according to the average of all the pollsters (including Fox News, CBS, CNN, etc.).

The article also points out that the majority of Americans are in favor of a public health insurance option that competes with private insurance. “Consumers of polls may consider these facts to be contradictory but they are not,” Bhatta says. “Americans want reform and are in favor of the public option but are opposed when asked specifically about the current health care bill.”

“There is a lot of misunderstanding about all of the poll numbers out there,” Bhatta continues. “Americans seem to be in favor of reform, but this doesn’t mean they support the current health care bill. When voters are surveyed specifically about the current bill, results show that only 40% support it.”

Scott Rasmussen of Rasmussen Reports responded to many of the critics of his polls, which show 56% opposition to the health care bill. Rasmussen says that when people cite dramatically different poll results, most of the time they are citing fundamentally different questions.

“In health care polling, virtually all polls show that most Americans want reform but not the reform that is currently being considered in Congress," Rasmussen says.

Bhatta agrees. "The wording of a question is vital to analyzing poll results. We only include polls that have similarly worded questions. When this is done, the results across most pollsters tend to be consistent rather than contradict each other," he says.

When asked why there appears to be a lot of confusion about the results, Bhatta adds, "Perhaps supporters of the bill would rather focus on how most Americans want reform in general instead of the fact that many oppose this specific bill. It should, instead, highlight the necessity of the bill's supporters to stress aspects of the bill that Americans want -- such as the public option."
