Rita Ranch Fun Day is 9 a.m. -1 p.m. today

The Rita Ranch Neighborhood Association will host its annual Family Fun Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Purple Heart Park, 10050 E. Rita Road.

The event will feature more than 60 booths sponsored by local businesses, politicians, community organizations and city agencies.

Some of the booths will sponsor activities such as jumping castles and a miniature train ride for children.

Interfaith food drive runs through June 27

Interfaith Community Services' second annual Freedom From Hunger food drive runs through June 27.

Donations of food or money can be dropped off at the following locations:

--Interfaith Community Services, 2820 W. Ina Road.

--Hughes Federal Credit Union, 971 W. Wetmore Road, 3131 E. Speedway, 7970 N. Thornydale Road, 9052 S. Rita Road, 280 N. Pantano Road, 8701 S. Kolb Road or 951 E. Hermans Road.

--Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, 3430 E. Sunrise Drive or 7367 E. Tanque Verde Road.

The organization is accepting nonperishable food such as cereal, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, canned meat, tuna and fruit.

Conference planned on racial harmony

The 22nd Street Baptist Church will host the 24th Annual Racial Reconciliation Community Outreach Conference next month.

The conference, which is presented by Sunshine Ministries Inc. and the Racial Reconciliation Community Outreach Network, will take place June 9 through 12 at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel & Suites, 5151 E. Grant Road.

The featured speaker will be Bishop Henry L. Porter, founder of the Henry L. Porter Evangelistic Association and Westcoast Center for Human Development in Sarasota, Fla.

The conference will feature a fine-arts festival, an All Nations night and a reconciliation banquet.

All sessions will begin at 7:30 p.m., except the June 12 session, which will begin at 6 p.m.

Sheriff's Dept. sets rape-defense classes

The Pima County Sheriff's Department will host a rape aggression defense class for women in the media and for the public this summer.

The first class for women in the media, consisting of two six-hour sessions over two days, will take place July 17 and 24 at the Sheriff's Department training center, 1270 W. Silverlake Road, behind the Pima County jail. The class will last from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Wives and daughters of media members also are invited to attend.

The second class, for the general public, will take place Aug. 7 and 14.

The course will involve repetitious kicking, punching and other defense techniques.

Comfortable shoes and attire are recommended.
