Malone home-invasion suspect a recently released convicted rapist

Aug. 17--MALONE -- A man accused of breaking into a Malone home and assaulting a woman there spent 23 years in prison for rape.

Timothy Jaworski, 40, has been indicted by a Franklin County grand jury in the recent case, but the exact charges cannot be made public until he is arraigned, District Attorney Derek Champagne said.

No court appearance had been set as of Friday.

Jaworski is being held on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 insurance bond in the County Jail, where he has been since his arrest Aug. 7.

He was charged by the Malone Village Police Department with first-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into a Park Street home Aug. 6 and attacking a woman inside.

"This attack was very violent, and we are very fortunate the victim was able to protect herself and that the defendant fled the location," Champagne said.

'CLOSE CALL'

The DA said Jaworski broke into the home as the woman slept in bed.

Her windows were open, and when she confronted by her attacker, her yelling and screaming were enough to scare the intruder away, he said.

"This incident was very close to a grave situation for the victim," Champagne said.

She was treated for unspecified injuries at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone and released.

"The defendant's prior conduct was a great concern to our office, and we will be aggressively pursuing this case to its completion.

"This individual is someone who law enforcement was very concerned about when he relocated to this area."

ADMITTED RAPE

In fact, Malone Police Chief Chris Premo posted a notice on the department's Facebook page in March 2013, alerting the community that Jaworski -- a registered sex offender -- was coming to live here.

Jaworski, a registered Level III sex offender in Massachusetts, was released from custody on March 26, 2013, after serving 23 years in the Massachusetts State Correctional System.

He was 18 when, on Dec. 3, 1991, he was sentenced to eight to 18 years in prison for aggravated rape, armed assault in a dwelling, breaking and entering in the daytime and larceny in a building.

He admitted he raped a 74-year-old woman while he held her at knifepoint on June 29, 1991.

That day was her 34th wedding anniversary.

ESCAPED FROM PRISON

According to newspaper accounts published in Holyoke, Mass., Jaworski was serving time at the Hampton County House of Correction for a series of break-ins and a purse snatching when he escaped from the minimum-security site on June 27, 1991, by climbing out a window.

Two days later, he came upon a house he thought was unoccupied, cut the screen to the bathroom window and climbed in. He found some alcohol on a basement shelf and stole $4 from a purse.

Then, he said, he heard footsteps upstairs.

Jaworski told Massachusetts police he confronted the woman in the hallway, grabbed her arm with one hand and took out his buck knife with the other. He pulled her into a bedroom and told her to sit on the bed.

He went about closing the window and curtains then ordered her to take her clothes off, he told police. And when she resisted, Jaworski showed her the knife again, and she complied.

"I tried to talk him out of it," the woman told police in a statement she provided. "He said he'd just gotten out of jail ... and hadn't had any for two years.

"I asked him why he wanted to bother with an old lady and why didn't he get a prostitute. He said he didn't have any money."

'JUST LET HIM OUT'

Jaworski told police he forced himself upon her sexually, told her to get dressed and took her downstairs to the kitchen, where he cut the telephone lines, raided the refrigerator, stuffed a bag with food and soft drinks and left.

He broke into another home a short time later, where he stole survival gear he found there, including a canteen and compass.

Jaworski took more food and clothing then fled again.

He said he had a drunken man cut his hair because the police had publicized his description.

Jaworski, who had twice before been committed to the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Bridgewater State Hospital, eluded police for three more days before being caught and sent to prison on Dec. 3, 1991.

More time was added to his sentence following convictions for escape and the break-ins he committed while free.

Premo said Jaworski came to Franklin County in March 2013, upon his release.
