Lynwood Mayor Aide Castro to Join Congresswoman Hahn at President Obama’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 -- Rep. Janice Hahn, D-Calif. (44th CD), issued the following news release:

On January 28, Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) will attend President Obama's State of the Union address with her special guest City of Lynwood, Mayor Aide Castro. Mayor Castro represents a community in Congresswoman Hahn's district with an unemployment rate of 14.8%, nearly double the national rate and a poverty rate of 16.2%.

"Mayor Castro and I have worked closely to bring resources and solutions that will help close the economic and achievement gap that the children and families we serve in the Lynwood community face, and I am honored to have the Mayor join me at President Obama's State of the Union address this year," said Congresswoman Hahn. "I hope that the President will lay out a blueprint that clearly focuses on the critical issues facing communities like Lynwood, such as passing comprehensive immigration reform, extending unemployment insurance, increasing the minimum wage and creating good paying jobs for American workers."

Mayor Castro was elected to serve as Mayor of Lynwood in 2013. Castro is committed to enhancing public safety, improving public infrastructure and increasing the City's financial return for economic development.

"I'm honored to have been invited to join Congresswoman Hahn at the State of the Union," said Mayor Castro. "Not only am I looking forward to seeing the President deliver his speech, but I'm hoping that in his address he touches on issues that affect communities like Lynwood. I'm hoping to hear him talk about the economic development of the nation, immigration reform and infrastructure investment. With the economy the way it is, it is important to touch on the subject of our unemployment rates, not just in Lynwood but across the country because when the economy suffers, our communities suffer."

Mayor Castro is very proud to be of Latino decent and represents her community by being a member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and the NALEO Educational Fund. NALEO is a nonprofit organization that facilitates the full participation of Latinos in the American political process, from citizenship to public service.
