Lewis County to start ultimate frisbee league

April 05--LOWVILLE -- Lewis County is about to get an ultimate frisbee league.

Double Play Community Center and several community members have developed the Ultimate Disc League, which will play for six weeks on Friday nights starting June 6.

"We already have two solid teams and three to four potentials," said Brandon Roggie, league coordinator.

Teams will play at the Lewis County Fairgrounds, 5473 Bostwick St. Games begin at 6 p.m. The league is actively seeking more teams. They hope to have a minimum of six. Teams need at least six players, but there's no limit to rosters.

"You can have as many people as you want, but the more you have, the less playing time everyone gets," Mr. Roggie said.

Participation requires a one-time fee of $25 per person, although teams may seek sponsors.

This is the second year the group has tried to arrange a league. Following an ultimate frisbee tournament in 2012, efforts were made to form a league, but it was too late in the season. Last year, roughly 30 people would meet at the fairgrounds for pick-up games on Sundays, but nothing official was organized.

Insurance is provided through Double Play Sports Center.

Games would last just under an hour with two 25-minute sessions and a five-minute halftime. The first block of the season is expected to go to July 11. Pending the success and players' goals, the season could enter another six-week block later in the summer, or the league could initiate playoffs.

Plans do not specify where the teams will come from. Mr. Roggie said they have even considered approaching a team from Utica.

"Anybody who wants to come out and watch the games, there will be tons of music and we'll play under the lights," he said.

Players adhere to USA Ultimate rules. Games will be overseen by an observer, rather than a referee. Teams will meet a week before the start of the season to decide the calls for which an observer will be responsible.

Team members must be 15 or older. Teams and rosters must be registered by Friday, May 23. Those interested in joining or businesses wishing to sponsor may contact Mr. Roggie at 222-4528 or email [email protected].
