Juveniles face arrest in Ringtown vandalism

Nov. 12--RINGTOWN -- Charges are expected to be filed this week against several Ringtown area juveniles in connection with a vandalism spree at the former Ringtown Area Elementary Center earlier this month.

Ringtown police Chief Adam J. Bernodin Jr. said the damage was done between Nov. 2 and 6.

He said the juveniles, who are not all from the borough, will be charged through the Schuylkill County juvenile system. The investigation is ongoing and the number who will be charged is not yet certain.

Bernodin said the juveniles spray painted graffiti on several exterior walls of the now borough-owned building, near the playground, and fled.

Bernodin said it could cost more than $1,000 to remove the graffiti from the building.

He said workers already tried to use a power washer cleaner to remove the writing and pictures, but had little success.

"It would appear the paint got into the brickwork, making it extremely difficult to remove," Bernodin said.

He said the borough and its insurance carrier may looking into special equipment for the job.

Mayor Albert Breznik said the borough is waiting for its insurance adjustor to survey the damage and determine what steps should be taken to clean it.

Breznik said there is not yet an official estimate on the cost of the damage.
