Jacksonville man dies after accidental shooting ; 21-year-old shot himself while ‘handling’ gun, according to police

Proquest LLC

A Jacksonville man died after accidently shooting himself in the stomach about 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Ray Adam Maniafico, 21, shot himself while "handling" his 9mm Hi- Point handgun at an apartment in the 2000 block of Dahlia Road off Edgewood Avenue North, according to a police incident report. After shooting himself, he made his way downstairs, banged on his neighbor's door and asked him to call 911.

Maniafico was alert when police arrived and told them he had shot himself, according to the report. Police found the handgun in his apartment and also seized a Remington pump-action shotgun owned by Maniafico.

He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville where he later died.

Derek Gilliam CHIROPRACTOR ACCUSED OF INSURANCE FRAUD

A 62-year-old Jacksonville Beach chiropractor was arrested on insurance fraud charges Friday after an investigation led by the Department of Financial Services found fraudulently billing and unlicensed staff who treated patients.

Steven Rhodes, who owns Ocean View Health in Jacksonville Beach, was booked into the Duval County jail and released on bail, according to jail records. He's accused of submitting fee slips that exaggerated the amount of treatments or were never performed, according to state Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater.

Insurance companies Kemper, State Farm, Nationwide, Esurance, Progressive, United Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield were all affected, Atwater said. Rhodes faces five years in prison per count if he is convicted.

A woman answered a call at his office Tuesday but Rhodes did not return the message.

Joe Daraskevich MAN ARRESTED IN SEXUAL-BATTERY CASE

A joint investigation led to Monday's arrest of a Jacksonville man in a sexual-battery case of a minor in Punta Gorda.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement regional centers in Tampa Bay and Jacksonville arrested Michael Scott Carter, 42, on one count of capital sexual battery of a victim younger than 12.

FDLE agents began investigating Carter in late 2013 after the Department of Homeland Security was targeting him in a child pornography operation.

After his wife separated from Carter, she informed agents that the victim recently told her he started sexually molesting her in 1999 when she was in the sixth grade.

She said he would first rub her back and then said he "knew something that would make her feel better," according to the arrest affidavit.

Carter is in the Duval County jail with no bail. His case will be prosecuted by the 20th Circuit State Attorney's Office, the FDLE said.
