In First Joint Book Effort, AARP and ABA Publish Practical Guide for Family Survivors

Targeted News Service

WASHINGTON, April 8 -- The AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) issued the following news release:

"Checklist" provides information, guidance and support following the loss of a loved one.

AARP, along with the American Bar Association (ABA), joined forces to publish a book for the survivors of deceased loved ones, the first co-publishing endeavor between the two organizations.

"ABA/AARP Checklist for Family Survivors: A Guide to Practical and Legal Matters When Someone You Love Dies" (AARP and ABA; March 2014; ISBN: 978-1-62722-282-2, $19.95) serves as a one-stop resource for family members when a loved one dies, helping them to assemble the important documents that they need and listing the steps to take during a stressful and emotional time.

Written by Washington, D.C.-area AARP lawyer and former ABA staff lawyer Sally Hurme, the "Checklist for Family Survivors" guides readers through:

* Creating a simple system to organize investments, assets and estate planning information.

* Keeping letters and forms updated.

* Gathering key information in either paper or electronic form.

* Getting organized in financial and legal matters.

* Assembling a team and working with key advisers to handle everything in confidence.

* Taking responsibility in an especially difficult situation.

This comprehensive yet straightforward book is intended to help family members deal with the myriad of financial and legal matters that are essential to manage when a family member dies. The book consists of easy-to-read checklists and forms that the reader is able to fill in and offers a convenient CD-ROM containing the documents in electronic format.

The book is a companion volume to Hurme's 2011 book, "ABA Checklist for Family Heirs," which was published solely by the ABA.

About the author:

Sally Balch Hurme, J.D., is currently a Senior Project Manager with the AARP Health Law Education team. In her twenty years at AARP, she has advocated on a wide range of issues including consumer fraud, financial exploitation, elder abuse, surrogate decision making, advance care planning, health care fraud, and financial security. She is well recognized as an elder law advocate who is quoted frequently in national media, including the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNN.com, Money, Kiplinger's Retirement Report, NPR, and AARP The Magazine. Hurme received her B.A. from Newcomb College of Tulane University and her J.D. cum laude from Washington College of Law, American University. She lives in Alexandria, VA.
