Gloucester Police/Fire: City man facing domestic charges

March 13--A 36-year-old Gloucester man was arrested Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. on a charge of domestic assault and battery after police responded to a domestic disturbance on Elwell Street.

According to the police report, officers found a woman on the scene visibly shaken and crying. She told officers an argument with Jose Florencio had started earlier Tuesday night, and the Elwell Street man had allegedly thrown the woman against a wall.

The woman declined medical treatment. Police said they smelled a "moderate" amount of alcohol on Florencio's breath when they arrived at the scene.

Police spoke with several people while responding to a medical emergency at 11:59 p.m. at Patriots Circle Tuesday.

When police arrived, a man was already on a stretcher and was in the process of being transported to Addison Gilbert Hospital for minor facial injuries.

Witnesses said the man had entered a home through an unlocked door, and -- when one of them would not leave -- that had led to a fight. The fight spilled out onto a lawn outside, and the defending man warded off the person who had entered the house. Witnesses believe that man was intoxicated, but nobody involved was looking to press charges, police said.

Police arrested a 65-year-old woman with a Gloucester post office box on driving charges after she was stopped just before 1 p.m. Tuesday on Maplewood Avenue.

According to police, Mary T. Cote was initially stopped because she failed to use her directional turn signal and officers confirmed that her registration was revoked.

Police also conducted a K-9 search for narcotics, as the officer said there were known drug users in the car, but nothing was found, according to the police report.

Cote is being charged with unlawful operation of a motor vehicle with revoked insurance and without registration.

Police warned a man to stop communicating with a Gloucester woman after the woman told police the man had for weeks been repeatedly sending her love letters.

The complaint was reported around 8:30 p.m. and the man told police he would stop sending what officers described as non-threatening love letters. There were no charges filed.
