Tropical Storm Debby

After stalling off Florida’s Gulf Coast most of the weekend, Tropical Storm Debby finally made landfall on Tuesday, May 26, near Steinhatchee. Tropical-storm warnings were in effect for 450 miles of coastline, from Mexico Beach in the Panhandle, to Englewood, south of Sarasota. By Tuesday afternoon, a State of Emergency had been declared for the entire state of Florida. By Wednesday, an estimated 35,000 homes and businesses had lost electricity, and flooding had been reported in low-lying coastal areas, and along rivers creeks in streams. According to a Reuters report, some places in the northeastern part of Florida received more than two feet of rain. Emergency managers in Pasco County on Florida's central Gulf Coast ordered a mandatory evacuation for 14,000 to 20,000 people living between the Anclote and Pithlachascotee Rivers due to high water. The storm spawned scores of tornadoes that caused severe damage to homes throughout Florida.
