Game of the week: North Fayette Valley blanks Decorah, 14-0

Aug. 30--WEST UNION -- For Bob Lape and his North Fayette Valley football team, the long wait to open the season against Northeast Iowa powerhouse Decorah was worth it.

The TigerHawks used a stingy defense to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard and scratched up a pair of touchdowns to grab a 14-0 victory in a matchup of Class 2A's No. 2 team and the Class 3A sixth-ranked Vikings.

For the night, Decorah managed only 131 yards of total offense.

Mother Nature did her part to add to the wait as a severe thunderstorm pushed the kickoff back about 80 minutes. Another 90 minutes was spent waiting in the third period when lightning flashed.

The only completed pass in the first half was a 25-yard strike from Jared Bouska to Derrick Kuehner for the only score of the half.

Junior Trevor Hurd added an insurance score with a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Josh Mackey, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior, led all rushers with 139 yards for the TigerHawks. Included in those carries were three fourth down conversions to allow North Fayette Valley to maintain possession.

"He just happened to be the kid that got the ball on those fourth-down situations," said Lape. "He's a good kid and a hard worker, and he got the job done.

Decorah took the opening drive to the TigerHawk 15, but was stopped short and lost possession on downs. That was as close as the Vikings got to the end zone.
