Education Foundation presents scholarships [Daily Record, The (Wooster, OH)]

MILLERSBURG -- The Holmes County Education Foundation presented scholarships totaling $131,550 for the 2013-2014 academic year, with $215,700 available to provide to renewing scholarship recipients.

According to the foundation, applicants had an unmet need of $485,344 despite receiving assistance from the foundation.

The HCEF selected the following first-year (not renewing) applicants to receive various scholarships. The scholarship, a brief description, and the recipients are:

The (anonymous donors) Achievement Scholarship, Holmes County students with high potential for success, pursuing the fields of teaching, engineering, science, nursing, or selected pre-med programs -- Andrew Gordon and Markilynn Hogle.

The Holmes County Bar Association Scholarship, graduating seniors of Hiland and/or West Holmes pursuing a law-related field of study - - Colton Shane.

Jennifer Bird Duff Memorial Scholarship, West Holmes graduating seniors who have participated in athletics and/or other extracurricular and service activities -- Andrew Gordon.

Harold (H.T.) and Louise Blum Scholarship, Holmes County residents exhibiting aptitude and creativity, an entrepreneurial spirit and leadership skills for becoming an effective contributor in his or her field of study and to society -- Lawrence Hines.

Joe & Frieda Bock Scholarship, West Holmes High School graduate pursuing a career in nursing -- Samantha Krejci.

Ami Breitenbucher Memorial Nursing Scholarship, graduating high school senior pursuing the field of nursing -- Jordain Bellville.

Francis Brundige Scholarship, Holmes County student attending Ohio State University or one of its branches -- Spencer Yoder from Hiland High School.

Cary Scholarship, Holmes County resident -- Amanda Shear.

Commercial & Savings Bank Scholarship, West Holmes High School graduate -- Grant Hay.

Dickersheet Scholarship, students majoring in the fields of agriculture, home economics or business and must be a Holmes County high school graduate -- Kayla Haycook, Kaylea Kessinger and Cameron Mast.

Donald C. Egger Memorial Scholarship, students pursuing higher education in the field of teaching -- Charity Mishler.

Aimee Frenette-Rickly Memorial Scholarship, female West Holmes graduating senior who has participated in athletics (preferably softball or volleyball) -- Hannah Frank.

Robert and Elsie Galley Educational Scholarship, Holmes County students majoring in agriculture, horticulture or another ag- related program -- Jaden Beachy, Melanie Bickel, Wyatt Gardner, Whitney Hottle, Troy Miller, Sheldon Mullet, Elizabeth Overholt, Mariah Ramirez, Matthew Schlegel, Kane Schonauer, Mitchell Sheely and Patrick Straits.

Melanie A. Gehm Memorial Scholarship, West Holmes graduating senior -- Jordain Bellville.

Graven Family Nursing Scholarship, Holmes County student pursuing a career in nursing -- Jordain Bellville.

Paul & Esther Haudenschild Memorial Music Scholarship, graduating senior of West Holmes, Hiland, Loudonville or Waynedale High School who will be pursuing a degree in music or has been involved in high school music programs -- Catherine Tish.

Holmes County Historical Society Scholarship, Holmes County student interested in history -- Daniel Nelson.

Fred and Ollie Hoffman Scholarship, Holmes County residents who will pursue a degree in pharmacy or education or attend Ohio Northern University -- Makenzie Mizer.

Holmes County Farm Bureau Scholarship, graduating Holmes County high school students with scholastic ability and character who are pursuing the field of agriculture -- Taylor Neuenschwander and Elizabeth Overholt.

Holmes Family Medicine Scholarship, one boy and one girl who were either homeschooled or attended West Holmes High School and were in the top 10 percent of their class and planned to receive a bachelor's degree in a health-related field -- Michael DeWitt and Markilynn Hogle.

German Culture Museum Scholarship, graduating Hiland high school senior who is pursuing history or education -- Natasha Yoder.

Hummel Insurance Agency Scholarship, West Holmes graduating senior with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, pursuing a bachelor's degree and majoring in insurance, business administration, accounting, finance, marketing, advertising or related field, It is sponsored by Hummel Group and Westfield Insurance Co. -- Courtney Kozak.

Jennifer M. Jones Memorial Scholarship, female West Holmes graduating senior who has participated in athletics -- Rachelle Morrison.

Killbuck Area Scholarship, students who have attended Killbuck or Clark elementary schools -- Colton Shane.

Thomas Layman Memorial Scholarship, Holmes County students demonstrating financial need and pursuing higher education in liberal arts including, but not limited to, literature, languages, philosophy, history, mathematics and science. -- Alyssa Russell, Catherine Tish and Laura Winegar.

Millersburg and Berlin Lions Clubs Scholarship, three West Holmes High School graduating seniors and three Hiland High School graduating seniors -- Aaron Hughes, Samantha Krejci, Jizelle Miller, Makenzie Mizer, Eric Schlabach and Spencer Yoder.

Helen Logsdon Scholarship, Holmes County students attending Ohio State University or any of its branches with a preference given to high school seniors with strong academics, involvement in student activities and work experience -- Matthew Schlegel.

Master's Service Scholarship, Holmes County residents attending a Christian college and/or pursuing the fields of ministry, music, music therapy or pharmacy -- Chase Tennant.

Warren McCulloch Memorial Scholarship, Holmes County students demonstrating financial need and pursuing higher education in an agricultural or equine-related field -- Wyatt Gardner.

McNutt Scholarship, a Holmes County student,and is based on financial need -- Laura Winegar.

Patricia M. Morganti Memorial Scholarship, West Holmes graduating seniors -- Catherine Tish.

Keith Nowels Memorial Scholarship, Holmes County graduating senior majoring in agriculture, an agricultural related program or who has completed four years of high school Agricultural Education (FFA) -- Elizabeth Overholt.

William H. Patten III Memorial Scholarship, West Holmes graduating seniors pursuing business and/or education-related fields -- Hannah Frank.

Raymond J. & Louella F. Patterson Scholarship for Teachers, awarded to current teachers within one of the school systems in Holmes County -- Shawna Gerber.

Judson and Beverly Schuler Scholarship, Holmes County residents pursuing higher education, with preference given to those pursuing the fields of law, licensed practical nursing, or health-related fields -- Christopher Beck and Amber Stutzman Tucker.

Blair Slutz Memorial Education Scholarship, graduating seniors from Hiland, Waynedale or West Holmes High School with Holmes County residency pursuing the field of education -- Felicia Messner.

R. Dean & Jean A. Smith Scholarship, designated for students with an Amish background who are residents of Holmes County and who are pursuing further education beyond the eighth grade -- Jonathan Beam.

Weber Girls Scholarship, graduating seniors of West Holmes High School or Waynedale High School, a child or grandchild of a veteran and pursuing post-secondary educational goals -- Vayden Wood.

Award amounts vary according to need and are evaluated on a case- by-case basis. Applications for the 2014-2015 academic year will be available on the Foundation's website (www.hcef.net) beginning in January.
