Cumberland man arrested on burglary, trafficking charges

Sept. 24--A report of a stolen firearm resulted in the arrest of a man on charges including burglary and drug possession.

Richard Huffaker, 22, of Cumberland, was arrested by Lynch City Police Chief James Fox on Friday.

According to the citation, Huffaker was pulled over by Cumberland Police Department Officer Cody Williamson when Fox and Lynch Police Officer John Brown arrived on the scene. Police searched for a firearm that had been reported stolen from the residence of Christina King and Robert Hamilton, but instead turned up 13 1/2 Suboxone strips and a cigarette pack containing what appeared to be marijuana.

The citation further states Huffaker had attempted to sell the firearm to more than one individual, eventually trading the gun to a man for two Suboxone strips and $10 cash. Huffaker admitted to police he broke into King's residence and took the gun, approximately $20 in change, and a white gold ring. Huffaker stated he attempted to pawn the ring, but did not have any identification. Another individual pawned the ring for $5 cash.

Police said Huffaker also admitted to police he sold half of a Suboxone strip for $5 cash. The gun was recovered at the home of Billy Boggs, who confirmed Huffaker's story. The ring was recovered at Parrot's Liquor by King.

Huffaker was charged with first-degree burglary, possession of marijuana, second-degree possession of a controlled substance and second-degree trafficking a controlled substance.

Huffaker was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $25,000 full cash bond.

In other police news,

-- Jerry Gilbert, 41, of Evarts, was arrested on Friday by Kentucky State Police Trooper Jared Boggs. Gilbert was charged with flagrant non-support, leaving the scene of an accident, failure of owner to maintain required insurance, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended or revoked operator's license and falsely reporting an incident.

Gilbert was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on two full cash bonds totaling $6,000;

-- Ricky Nelson Harris, 55, of Owensboro, was arrested on Saturday on charges of flagrant non-support and persistent felony offender II. Harris was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1,000 full cash bond.
