Carlsbad business: Kidz Two replaces Happiness Christian Daycare; Carlsbad Insurance under new ownership [Carlsbad Current-Argus, N.M.]

Jan. 22--When Happiness Christian Day Care, located at 201 N. Mesa St, announced it was closing its doors, parents were panicked. Finding daycare in Carlsbad, especially for infants, is difficult and vacancies at daycare centers are hard to find.

But Carlsbad Family Fellowship Church came to the rescue. On Jan. 15, it reopened Happiness Christian Day Care and renamed it Kidz Too. That's the good news. The bad news is that it already is full. However, Lonnie Long, Kidz Too director, says there are a still a few vacancies at the Kidz Inc. facility at 201 N. Church St., where infants are also accepted. Carlsbad Insurance Agency, at 313 N. Canyon St., is also under new ownership. Angela Vasquez officially became the new owner Jan. 1 after purchasing the agency from Chase Ventures. Vasquez is not new to the agency and insurance business. She was a Carlsbad High School student in 1989 when she was hired by Oran Means, the original owner of the business.

"Oran was my mentor, that's for sure," Vasquez said, adding that she will continue providing home and auto insurance in the hometown tradition set by Means.

Vasquez said the agency's staff of 10 all retained their jobs and she hopes to expand the staffing as her company's client base grows and additional services are added. * * *

On the issue of expansion, Garden Mart, 400 E. Hamilton, is opening a second location, at 504. N. Canyon St.The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting and grand opening at 5 p.m. Friday. The store will offer the usual flowers and gifts on a cash and carry basis.

Everyone is looking forward to Chapman's Restaurant opening. The new restaurant, currently under construction on North Main Street, will offer steak and seafood. Owner Rob Chapman says he hopes to be open for business sometime in the spring. * * *

what's up with The Village at Carlsbad apartment complex that was under construction and appears to be at a standstill. A spokesman at the city of Carlsbad Building, Licensing and Permitting Department said when contacted, that there have been some contractor issues that are being resolved.
