Best Bets: Bellingham’s Dance Collective on stage this weekend

Feb. 27--Join Bellingham's Dance Collective for an evening of dance -- delightful, thought-provoking, and beautiful at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, Bellingham, 1314 Harris Ave.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, and March 8, 5 p.m. Sunday, March 2, March 9.

Highlighted this year is a piece nationally recognized choreographer Tom Evert, and others regional favorites, including Van Zandt's Erika Beaudin, Colorado-based Nancy Cranbourne, Western Washington University dance professor Melissa Rolnick and Dance Gallery co-founder Dan Dalley.

Guest performers include Wade Madsen, Nancy Cranbourne and Anika Klix.

Tickets $12, are available in advance at Village Books and The Community Food Co-op.

Each performance includes a silent auction to raise funds for the nonprofit group. A free reception after the March 9 performance, open to the public, features refreshments and opportunties to talk with the dancers.

A family and student preview is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28; $5 at door.

INTERNATIONAL NIGHT AT WHATCOM CC

Whatcom Community College's International Night of cuisine, live music, performances and dancing from around the world is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the College's Syre Student Center, 237 W. Kellogg Road.

Countries represented are Japan, Indonesia, India, Germany, USA, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Ghana, South Africa, Mongolia, Brazil, Egypt, Turkey, Colombia, Vietnam, Thailand.

Performances include the Mahala dancers (belly dancing), Bhangra dancing, Saman Dance (Indonesia), Tai-Chi demonstration, Silk Road Dancers (China), Guzheng (Chinese zither), local ukulele group and there'll be an international fashion show.

Admission is $5; bring a potluck dish to share and get in for free.

HOME AND GARDEN SHOW IN LYNDEN

The 35th annual Whatcom County Home and Garden Show returns to the Northwest Washington Fair Grounds at 1775 Front St., in Lynden, from Feb. 28 to March 2.

Educational classes will be held daily on the hour, sponsored by the Building Industry Association of Whatcom County. Topics include homebrewing, landscaping, solar technology, chickens, building, insurance, architecture, and, at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 2, gardening with Ciscoe Morris.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 55 and older, and free for youths 15 and younger. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.Feb. 28, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.March 1 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.March 2. Details: biawc.com/homeshow.
