BRIEF: Fundraiser for cancer at restaurant a success

Feb. 28--Cancer Kids of S.J. County raised more than $26,000 on Monday when it took over Dave Wong's Restaurant for an evening fundraiser.

Proceeds from the event will be distributed to local families of children who are in active or maintenance treatment for cancer and are paying for expenses not covered by their insurance.

"Dave Wong's was gracious enough to shut down their restaurant for the evening to allow this to happen," said Don Walters, co-founder of the nonprofit. "The community support from Stockton and Lodi has been truly overwhelming."

Cancer Kids of S.J. County was founded in 1999 as Lodi Cancer Kids, initially to assist six Lodi families who had children in cancer treatment at University of California, San Francisco.

The charity expanded and now helps children from all over the county.

Peggy Walters said 280 people participated in Monday's fundaiser.
