BRIEF: Former attorney reports to jail for stealing disability checks [Richmond Times-Dispatch, Va.]

Sept. 30--Former attorney Kyle C. Leftwich, convicted two years ago of embezzling about a half million from a Hopewell law firm, has reported to the Henrico County jail this afternoon after a two-year delay.

The mother of two children and longtime lawyer with the Marks & Harrison law firm was sentenced to serve 40 months in prison in November 2011 but was allowed to remain free pending appeal.

The state Supreme Court turned away the appeal last week.

Leftwich, 48, had been with the firm handling disability claims since 1994 but began depositing checks from the Social Security Administration into her own account; investigators established a $450,000 loss.

Leftwich, of the 1100 block of West Ave. in Richmond, was a former board member of the Virginia Poverty Law Center.
