Angel MedFlight Brings Michael Henkel, a Bone Marrow Donor, from Germany to Meet Lori McFate in Iowa For a Holiday Homecoming

The public voted for five finalists in Angel MedFlight Air Ambulance’s first Holiday Homecoming campaign, and the public’s choice was Lori McFate from Bettendorf, Iowa. The goal of this inaugural campaign was to give back by helping someone reunite or connect with a loved one and allowing the community to determine the recipient of the gift.

Lori nominated Michael, who donated bone marrow through the international registry and ultimately, in her words, saved her life. For more than seven years they have waited to meet as they now share the same DNA and consider themselves family. She asked to be considered and fly home this man who gave her the ultimate gift, life.

“By the grace of God, Michael came onto the international registry just when I needed him and agreed to be my ‘perfect match’ bone marrow donor!”, stated Lori McFate. “Thanks to Michael’s good health, unselfishness, willingness and compassion – I am alive today.”

Interested participants submitted an essay of 500 words or less, on why their nominee should be chosen for the homecoming flight. The promotion was open to anyone and all stories were encouraged.

As a surprise gift, born from the generosity of Angel MedFlight’s owner, Jeremy Freer, the other four finalists will receive Southwest airline gift cards to help them fly home their nominated loved one at a time of their choice.

“We were overwhelmed by the response to this campaign,” stated Cassandra Graper, Chief Strategy Officer at Angel MedFlight. “So many people experience real, everyday challenges from health to finances to distance - and we feel privileged that we are able to help others this holiday. We will definitely offer another Holiday Homecoming promotion in 2014.”

Michael will fly to Iowa on December 28 to meet Lori in person for the very first time. As a keepsake, the flight and meeting will be professionally captured by Angel MedFlight’s Emmy -winning videography team.
