Allsup and Invisible Disabilities Association Invite You to Get Personal During Disability Awareness Month (DAM)

PR Web

Belleville, Ill (PRWEB) September 30, 2014

October is Disability Awareness Month (DAM), and a fitting time to raise awareness that disabilities aren't always visible. They can affect people in different ways, according to Allsup, a nationwide Social Security Disability Insurance representation company. Allsup and the Invisible Disabilities Association (IDA) invite individuals with disabilities, caregivers, advocates and family members to share their personal stories on Allsup's Facebook page throughout October, for opportunities to raise awareness, win gift cards and raise funds for the IDA.

Each person who posts to Allsup's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/allsupinc using #DAMPersonal at the beginning of their post will be eligible to win a $100 Amazon gift card each week in October. A total of four gift cards will be awarded throughout the month. Winners will be determined by the number of "shares" their post receives. In addition, Allsup will make a donation based on the number of winning "shares" to IDA each week. For more information on the #DAMPersonal Facebook promotion, click here.

"Everyone has a story," said IDA founder and CEO Wayne Connell. "My wife Sherri's story is the inspiration behind IDA. Through our work supporting people with invisible disabilities and educating others, we've had the privilege of hearing hundreds of amazing stories.

"One of the greatest benefits in sharing personal stories is that it helps people realize that they are not alone," he said. Read Connell's personal story here.

This year's IDA Awards recipients are examples of individuals who have powerful personal stories. They include Scott Parker, who played right wing for the Colorado Avalanche when the team won hickey's Stanley Cup in 2001, and Matt Iseman, physician, comedian, actor and host of television's American Ninja Warrior. Parker will receive IDA's Perseverance Award and Iseman will be recognized with the Inspiration Award.

Read their personal stories and add your own by posting on Allsup's Facebook here. Weekly winning posts will receive $100 Amazon gift cards.

"But more importantly, by posting personal stories, people are helping to raise awareness," Connell pointed out. "Just because their disabilities are invisible, it does not mean that they have to be."
